A weird mix of Latin and Greek
Lot 1119
MYSIA. Lampsacus. Gallienus. Assarion (?) (Bronze, 18 mm, 3.26 g, 7 h). C GAΛΛIENVƧ (sic!) Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Gallienus to right, seen from behind. Rev. ΛΑΝΨΑΚΗ/Ν/Ω/N Tyche standing front, head to left, holding rudder in her right hand and cornucopiae in her left. Plankenhorn, Mysien, p. 100, 65 (this coin). SNG Copenhagen -. SNG Paris -. SNG von Aulock -. Very rare. Minor deposits on the obverse, otherwise, very fine.

From the collection of G. Plankenhorn, ex Athena 2, 4 October 1988, 484.

This is an interesting coin, showing an unusual portrait of Gallienus and a weird mix of Latin and Greek in the obverse legend. Both of it is very likely influenced by the abundant coinage from the nearby Latin colony of Alexandria Troas.
